Bioware KOTOR MMO Rumors Continue
(From PrimoTechnology.com)

A source close to BioWare confirmed to us today that the studio?s upcoming untitled massively-multiplayer online RPG will be centered around the Star Wars universe, specifically that of Knights of the Old Republic, which the developer released in 2003. The game garnered critical acclaim and spawned a less-popular sequel, released by Obsidian two years later.

The game is being developed by the company?s Austin studio, formed in 2006 and headed by BioWare Creative Director James Ohlen, whose past credits include the first KOTOR, Neverwinter Nights, and Baldur Gate?s I and II.

This is not the first Star Wars-related MMORPG: Star Wars Galaxies debuted in the summer of 2003, followed by several expansions. It was generally well-received by fans and critics, but subscriber numbers plunged and never recovered after a controversial gameplay update in 2005. It?s estimated that the game now has fewer than 100,000 subscribers and less than 20,000 active players.

It?s currently unknown whether or not EA, which acquired BioWare last week, will act as publisher for this title, or if the studio had a previous arrangement with another publisher.

Expect the game sometime in 2009.

When BioWare officially announces it is making a Star Wars MMO my life will be officially ruined because all I will do is devote myself to that game.

The fact that they denied these rumors early on is a little frustrating, but I don't care anymore.

I did a little research, and its very likely that it is SW, since there is a public domain investment .pdf floating around that lists all of Bioware's (now EA's) holdings, and whether or not EA owns the IP. 'Untitled MMO' is listed, and is also listed as an IP that is not owned by the company, which would mean its not going to be a Mass Effect, Jade Empire, or Dragon Age mmo, like some have speculated.

The only other thing it might be is a D&D game, probably Forgotten Realms given the Baldur's Gate and NWN history, as that is also not Bioware's/EA's IP.

I was excited about this game - BioWare make the best RPGs in the world. They know how to make an interesting combat system and they hire the best writers. I think they'll do great things with an MMO.

If this rumour is true? I'm no longer excited about this game. I am terrified and ecstatic. This will be a day long remembered; it has seen the death of Galaxies, and will soon see the end of my social life.

Yeah, not sure how I feel about this one. I certainly don't have enough time for a Star Wars MMO, work, family, and all of my current creative projects. Bittersweet, this rumor is!

Well, you've got at least until 2009, plenty of time to abandon the family (or feed them some preliminary mmo crack), quit your day job, and finish your projects.

Yeah, by 2009 you could have published your first bestseller and just live off of the royalties for the rest of eternity...by which I mean spend all your time in a BioWare Star Wars MMO and hang out on SWAC, because I'm pretty sure that's what most of us would do.
