RebelFox Comment 1 Holy shit! Pardon my Huttese, but I'm going to have to forego my trip to the comic shop and head down to the Walden Books instead. Looks like an afternoon of Starbucks and 'Death Star' (or 'That's No Moon...It's a Kick-Ass SW Novel!' as JediJef calls it) and another fib to the ole' fiance about having to work late!
I haven't read the MedStar Duology (is there a review on that handy, preferably a Jef one, no offense to the rest of the council?) but a grittier look at the more mundane Star Wars non Force user is what I'm looking for. It's fun to read about Jedi, but every now and then I want to read about an ensemble cast in the Star Wars universe, preferably something a little more rough around the edges and nostalgic; something that takes me back to the OT, if it do ya' fine. The little teaser about the "grizzled master chief gunnery officer" gave me an image of something reminiscent of WWII and the sobering emotions that Colonel Paul Tibbets must have felt when he dropped Little Boy on Hiroshima... Jef Comment 2 I suspect the authors used Tibbets as a model, as I had the same thought while reading. And yeah, if its OT nostalgia and non-Force users that floats your boat, definitely pick up Death Star.
I did write a Medstar review a couple of years back. It should be toward the bottom of the archived reviews on the 'Books' page. RebelFox Comment 3 Spanking nice job on the review, Master Jef. The wait was well worth it. I'm just reading it a few more times to sate me until tomorrow and my lunch break. I don't think my midichlorian count is all that high, but I'm having visions of myself getting back from lunch later than usual tomorrow afternoon.
Jef Comment 4 Haha, yeah, that happened to me too. I bought it a week ago Tuesday and started reading it as I was sitting there eating lunch. Before I knew it, an hour and a half (and six chapters) had gone by, and I stayed up late that night to finish it.
It was that rare SW book that I just couldn't put down, mainly because it was the perfect storm of OT nostalgia. I'd really been craving some old-school SW of late, and Death Star was more than up to the task. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. DarthDan Comment 5 Badass review. (love the title, lmao)
This sounds like its going to blow-away-badass? and give Inferno a hard run for its money on my roster of favored SW novels. I didn't know it was hardcover. How much is it? Jef Comment 6 I forget, I think the cover price is like $25.95 or something like that.
RebelFox Comment 7 I dont know how to make the nifty trademark symbol, but "blow-away-badass"! lol
Forever Comment 8 You had me at "character-driven oasis amid the desert that is licensed spin-off fiction."
A 1400 word article seems like something out of a magazine (*cough* Insider *cough*). Certainly not a mere fan review. Im not even going to get into the kind of quality you'll find in other fan reviews when compared to what is showcased here on starwarsaddiction. I can totally see the whole doomed Titanic thing coming over the reader while slowly being immersed in these characters lives. Can't wait to experience the 'sinking' of the Death Star for myself.
Angyll Comment 9 *watches Jef's head expand more and more*
As always, your reviews are great hun. I will be stealing this off your shelf, not soon enough. Jef Comment 10 Eh? My head's not expanding, goofball, if anyone's should be its Steve Perry and Michael Reaves. All I did was enjoy their work.
DarthDan Comment 11 Nah, give yourself some credit, and some ego +5, as that was one heck of a well written review. You got everyone jazzed and ready to rip copies of Death Star off of the shelves. Well done.
RebelFox Comment 12 I am almost done, Master Jef.
This may be my favorite Star Wars fiction of all time. Jef Comment 13 Cool, glad you're digging it. It ranks right up there for me as well.
DarthDan Comment 14 "I'm haunted by the review you should never have given me. My Endorian Woody is beating, hoping that review will not become an unfulfilled tease. It is in my very soul, tormenting me. What can I do? I will do anything you ask..."
Jef Comment 15 Lmao. There are so many things wrong with that statement, I don't know where to begin. Made me laugh though.
RebelFox Comment 16 Wow is really all that I can say. That was some spanking fine ass fiction. I particularly enjoyed the discussion between the Emperor and Vader. That gave me some RotJ Wood right there!
My only complaint would be in not rushing all of this. They should have taken this same story and characters and delved deeper. They should have stretched it into a Death Star trilogy. It's Star Wars intellectual property, if it sells it will be a trilogy. Jef Comment 18 Unfortunately it won't, it was pretty emphatically tied up, at least from the perspective of most of the major characters.
DarthDan Comment 19 I'm seventy pages into Death Star. Shwoo-tastic thus far. . .
calitank Comment 20 just finished this book it gives an interesting look a familar story
