X-wing: Rogue Leader marks a return, of sorts, to a period in Star Wars history that has long been a fan favorite. The titular leader is none other than Luke Skywalker, and this initial chapter in a planned trilogy from Dark Horse Comics is something of a nostalgic treat for those of us longing for the days of the original film trilogy.

The action picks up a week after the destruction of Death Star II over Endor, and the story finds the up and coming Rogues performing mop up duty around the Sanctuary Moon.

The script, by Haden Blackman, is rather simple, which is to be expected given Blackman?s propensity for being unable to tell an authentic Star Wars story (he is the producer of the notoriously anti-canon ?roleplaying? game known as Star Wars Galaxies). Thankfully, Blackman manages not to muck up any more continuity here, and leaves the bulk of the storytelling to talented artist Tomas Giorello.

Giorello fills his panels with vibrant, action-packed artwork, showing us the dead bodies of TIE Fighter pilots trapped in their post-Endor hulks, a nifty re-imagining of aerial firefighting courtesy of a refitted B-Wing, and a lush depiction of the nightlife in the city of Coronet, aptly dubbed the ?Jewel of Corellia.? Colorist Michael David Thomas also flexes his artistic muscles here, fleshing out parts of a city that has received it?s share of ink in the Star Wars mythology, but rarely in such vivid color and detail.

There is a lot to like here, from the return of many familiar faces, to the slick X-wing cover art by Gary Erskine, to the highly charged action that wastes no time presenting itself. The only real problem is having to wait a month for X-Wing: Rogue Leader Part II.
