Galaxies: Breaking the Dev-inci Code for Chapter 9

After months of inactivity, swg.stratics.com has given us another Star Wars Galaxies Dev chat, and BOY did we get a lot of information as to what is ahead for us in 2008.

So far, the big news on chapter 8 is that it will feature around a new heroic instance that any experienced Star Wars EU fan worth their salt should know… The Ghost of Exar Kun! Also featured in this chapter will be the first of profession updates, starting with Smugglers, Spies, Entertainers, & Medics. The devs also assure us that ALL professions will receive updates all the way down to Politician within the next several months.

The other big news is that the new Droid Commander profession is still on track. Chapter 9 will include the background server infrastructure for the new profession (much like they did with Beast Master) and Droid Commander should be a huge part of Chapter 10.

Some other tidbits:
  • The devs have fixed the bugs with character animations so they will be working on updating the current animations to something closer to preNGE. Also they are looking into the possibility of changing some of the old unused animations to emotes for RP use.
  • We will be seeing new planets in the future as part of heroic instances, but we will not be getting full new planets any time in the near future.
  • The devs still have no current final plans for server consolidations, as they state the problems are too complex.
  • Gardening is still on the table, but apparently not a priority.
  • Along with updates to all professions, cities and player associations are getting updates as well as the looking for group system
Well there you have it folks. The first Dev Chat of the New Year and probably the most information I’ve seen in one, well, EVER.

It’s a good time to be playing Galaxies. For the first time ever we have devs who not only communicate with the player base rather well, they also LISTEN (which is as good as it is bad). They have given us lots of new content, given space its first update in almost three years, and Galaxies is arguably in the best playable shape it’s ever been in.

This could be a redeeming year for Galaxies, as long as whatever Bioware is working on doesn’t put the final nail in the coffin too soon.
