You'll forgive me if I did a double-take upon opening the latest chapter of Star Wars: Legacy. Issue #24, subtitled Home, starts with Zeltron smuggler Deliah Blue lounging by a pool in a tiny two-piece bikini, flanked by a bare chested Cade Skywalker holding the Star Wars equivalent of a margarita and looking like any number of angst-ridden teens on vacation at their parents' resort of choice.
The crew of the Mynock has holed up at the refuge of Droo and Bantha Rawk, a Haven-like settlement that bears more than a passing resemblance to Shepherd Book's remote hideaway glimpsed in the film Serenity. Temporary domestic bliss ensues, that is until the crew gets wind of Darth Krayt's genocidal rampage against the Mon Calamari via a holofeed, and Cade (with a little prodding from an Imperial landing force) makes a hasty decision to beat it and attempt to kill the artist formerly known as A'sharad Hett.
While it all sounds good on the surface, John Ostrander's script is a bit uneven, and Cade in particular oscillates between supercool badass and whiney malcontent. His reversion to spice is a bit sudden, and just as suddenly forgotten as he is able to take a meeting (and remain coherent) almost immediately after shooting up.
All is not lost, however, as penciller Jan Duursema turns in her usual stellar work. Bantha Rawk, in particular, is drawn with a gruff, Wilford Brimley-esque charm that makes his crotchety old geezer act even more irresistible. Similarly, the crew of the Mynock is as visually stunning as ever, from Syn's dreadlocks to Blue's curves to Cade's tattoos, no one draws Star Wars like Duursema.
Ultimately, its hard to tell where this current story arc is going, and this particular interlude seems slightly out of place, thematically, with the rest of the series. That said, its still a fun read, full of eye candy and vivid characters, and there are much worse ways to spend your Star Wars dollars.
