LuvtheDarkSide Comment 1 very true
Angyll Comment 2 mmm I can be a sanitarium orderly!!! or actually I resemble a patient more...
Inspired, Star Wars has. Many before, and more after, yes. Never ending the cycle shall be. CAndyman Comment 3 QUOTE(DarthDan @ July 21 2008, 09:41 AM) "(Star Wars is) a great movie to be sure, but there are many superior movies, and none of them have inspired, say, thousands of people to dress up as faceless, nameless secondary characters. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was a great movie, but you don't see 200 sanitarium orderlies marching in the Rose Parade." Well that's simple.... Stormtroopers are Bad-Ass, Orderlies are....uh....janitors...who the hell wants to be a janitor? But seriously, Star Wars characters are not just cool, they are impressive looking and instantly recognizable. You dress up like a janitor and the most acknowledgment you will likely get is asked to clean up puke in Convention Center's food court! DarthDan Comment 4 Yeah, who wants to dress up as a giant, friend-smothering Indian anyway?
darth yoda Comment 5 What is up with the "virulent media infection" comment? Perhaps jealousy? Unless I took the comment out of context, it seems ridiculous. I mean, who wants action figures of disorderlies?
DarthDan Comment 6 QUOTE(darth yoda @ July 21 2008, 10:24 PM) What is up with the "virulent media infection" comment? Perhaps jealousy? Unless I took the comment out of context, it seems ridiculous. I mean, who wants action figures of disorderlies? No, the author was making a very interesting point. There are better pieces of film out there than Star Wars, yet Star Wars is unique in that it inspires so many folks and is such a phenomenon. I agree that's what is meant, despite the sarcastic oversimplification of the author. It isn't any one thread in the tapestry, it is the combined threads, and the way in which they are woven that becomes the masterpiece. Dolan Kerys Comment 8 Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I can go and put in an application and BE an orderly, if that floats my boat.
Anyway, what in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest would one actually aspire to? The lobotamised criminal? The evil nurse? The "friend-smothering" native american? Not quite up to par with the intergalactic heroes and villains that populate Lucas' fantasyscape. I realize that it wasn't exactly meant to be pulitzer journalism, but that was ridiculous. As far as film goes, Star Wars was an entirely new entity, enfranchising a vast and underlooked demographic. Comparing it to any of its predecessors or contemporaries is apples to oranges. |
