'Legacy' Promises A Dark Future
by DarthDan

With Revenge of the Sith's release and the closure of the Star Wars saga as told in film, Dark Horse was given the opportunity of leaping into the future of the Star Wars timeline with their Legacy comic series that launches this summer. Lauded for their portrayal of Star Wars history in the Tales of the Jedi series some thirteen years ago, Dark Horse carries with them a clout and confidence among fans as they tackle the saga?s untold future.

Recently, I had the pleasure of picking up Legacy #0, and what they will be giving us is, in a word, dark! So, I'd like to share some highlights on what you can expect from this hauntingly promising series.

Cade Skywalker
The bad boy hero of Legacy, Cade Skywalker has turned his back on his master, Wolf Sazen, and the Jedi order. Abandoning the Skywalker name, Cade has found a life on the fringes as a pirate-trained bounty hunter. Armed with a Rawk Chopped Special custom blaster pistol and a collection of antique weaponry, Cade leads his partners, Deliah Blue and Jariah Syn, aboard his ship, the Mynock. Deliah, the Mynock's female Zeltron mechanic, feels drawn to the Cade, despite him being damaged goods by a past untold. For not even his friends are aware that he was once a Jedi, let alone a Skywalker...

Imperial Might
The Fel Dynasty sires the Galactic Empire, whereon the throne sits Roan Fel, a third generation Emperor. The beautiful princess, Marasiah Fel, is in line to succeed her father as Empress, but Legacy #0 speaks of how this fact has many powerful and influential Moffs concerned about a woman leading their empire, especially in their current war with the Sith.

The hammer of the Imperial Navy is the new and sleek Pellaeon-class Super Star Destroyer, whereas the old TIE Interceptors have been surpassed by the new Sienar Predator-class fighters, that boast hyperdrive capabilities and shield generators built within their multi-position dagger-shaped wings.

The most exciting addition to the Empire in the Legacy time period, is the crimson-armored Imperials Knights: fully trained Jedi that pledge their allegiance solely to the Emperor. Serving neither the Force nor the dark side, Imperial Knights are often referred to as Gray Jedi. It is interesting to note that in the Imperial Knight artwork provided in Legacy #0, their sleeves are black and very reminiscent of the material and look of Darth Vader's sleeves. Just a cool tidbit.

The Jedi
One hundred and thirty years after the Battle of Endor, the Jedi order has been reestablished by Luke Skywalker and consolidated into one powerful group of Jedi Knights. Among them is luminary Kol Skywalker, a master of the Jedi Council and an august tactician who teaches his Jedi that war is often-times necessary to preserve peace. Kol instructed the Zabrak Jedi Knight, Wolf Sazen (featured left), Cade's estranged mentor. Kol's relation to Cade, unfortunately, was not mentioned.

The Sith Return
The rule of two was dissolved by Darth Krayt, the ancient and menacing figure featured above, who reformed the Sith approximately thirty years after the Battle of Endor. Using the powerful concentration of dark side energy surrounding Korriban as a veil, Lord Krayt hid his order from the knowledge of the galaxy where he began rebuilding their power and knowledge of the ancient lores. Darth Talon, a red female twi'lek bearing ancient Sith tattoos inscribed by Darth Krayt, is the personal tool of the dark lord, much as Maul was to Sidious. Among other sith that were featured in the preview issue were the second-in-command of the Sith, a Chagrian named Darth Wyyrlok, a crimson-skinned female called Darth Maladi whose species I do not recognize, a wraithful Nagai warrior called Darth Nihl, and a tattooed human male called Darth Stryfe.

In closing, Dark Horse's Star Wars: Legacy looks promosing in its dark vignettes and Quinlan Vos-styled roguishness. I, for one, can't wait!
